Massive Open Online Courses and intercultural competence: analysis of courses fostering soft skills through language learning

This paper aims to survey language teaching MOOCs that promote intercultural competence (IC). Specifically, the identify keywords most relevant with IC components, languages taught, offering countries, and embedded soft skills. The selection of is important because they can indicate connection between different disciplines. After trialing a broader set in several rounds initial search, we identified five are education components on MOOCs: culture, intercultural, cross multi society. Then courses these learning selected for further analysis. results summarized as follows: (1) Most found under keyword “culture,” indicating strong communication; (2) In terms target it English, Chinese, Spanish major widely taught context competence; China, United States, Ireland three countries which offer highest numbers this respect; Kingdom, Australia languages. limited number dominate MOOCs. study calls plurality cultures be through MOOCs, making more diversified knowledge systems accessible global audiences. (3) not only focus but also aim foster types skills (language skills, communication business entrepreneurship career development cultural skills), suggesting its related usually such courses.
